Privacy Policy

What MyBookWorth collects, why, who it is shared with, and how to get it deleted.

1. Who is responsible for your data

MyBookWorth (mybookworth.com) is run by Antonio Lopes, an individual based in Portugal. Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Antonio Lopes is the data controller for the personal data described here.

You can reach us about anything on this page at [email protected]. We are a one-person operation and are not required to appoint a Data Protection Officer, so we have not appointed one. That address reaches the person responsible.

2. What we collect

• Search terms. The words you type into the search box. They are sent to our server and used to find matching listings. Please keep to book titles and authors — there is no reason to type personal information into a book search.
• Book photos you upload. If you use Book Scan, the photo you choose is uploaded so the title can be read from it. Section 5 explains what happens to it.
• Analytics data (only with your consent). Which pages you visit, roughly where you are in the world, your device and browser type, and how you found the site.
• Technical and advertising data. Our server and our security provider record things like IP addresses and browser details so we can keep the site online and block abuse. With your consent, advertising partners may also use identifiers to choose and measure ads.

3. What we deliberately do not collect

• There are no accounts, logins, or passwords on this site.
• We take no payments, so we never see card or bank details.
• We do not ask for your name, postal address, or phone number.
• We do not sell personal data, and we do not build advertising profiles ourselves.

4. Why we are allowed to process it

Under Article 6 of the GDPR we rely on three grounds:

• Providing what you asked for. When you submit a search or a photo, handling it is the whole point of your request.
• Our legitimate interests. Keeping short-lived records of traffic so we can stop abuse and attacks and fix faults. The data involved is minimal and is not used to target you.
• Your consent. Analytics and advertising cookies are used only if you agree to them, and you can change your mind at any time. See section 6.

5. How uploaded photos are handled

This is the most sensitive thing the site touches, so we spell it out:

• Your photo is used only to read the book title from it. The title, not the photo, is what we then search on.
• We do not keep uploaded photos in the website itself, and there is no public gallery of them.
• To read the title, the photo is sent to OpenAI. OpenAI states that data sent through its service is not used to train its models and is kept only briefly for abuse monitoring.
• A copy of the photo is also sent to a private channel on Discord, a third-party chat service, which the site owner uses to check that scans are working and to fix ones that fail. The channel is not public, but messages there stay until they are deleted.

If you would like a photo you uploaded deleted, email [email protected] with the rough date and time of your scan and we will remove it. Please avoid uploading photos showing faces, documents, or anything else you would not want a third party to hold.

6. Cookies and your choices

A cookie is a small file a site stores in your browser. MyBookWorth needs no cookie at all to run a search.

The first time you visit, a banner asks what you are happy with. Nothing optional loads until you choose, and refusing is exactly as quick as accepting — one click either way, with nothing pre-ticked. You can change your answer whenever you like: reopens the banner, and the same link sits in the footer of every page. Your answer is stored in your own browser, not on our server, so clearing your browser data will bring the banner back.

The three categories are:

• Essential. Always on. Our security provider, Cloudflare, may set a cookie to tell real visitors apart from bots. It keeps the site available and is not used for tracking or advertising.
• Analytics. Only with your consent. Google Analytics helps us see which pages people find useful. These cookies can last up to two years.
• Advertising. Only with your consent. Advertising partners, and the affiliate network impact.com, may set cookies to choose ads, limit how often you see the same one, measure results, and credit a purchase to us. See our advertising and affiliate disclosure.

Whatever you choose here, you can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, use a private window, install Google’s Analytics opt-out add-on, turn off personalised Google ads at adssettings.google.com, or read how Google uses data from partner sites at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

7. Who we share data with

We do not sell your data. We share it only with the companies that make the site work, each acting under its own terms:

• OpenAI — helps interpret your search text and read titles from uploaded photos.
• Google — analytics and advertising, with your consent.
• Cloudflare — sits in front of the site to keep it fast and secure, so it sees the details of every request.
• impact.com — affiliate link tracking, with your consent.
• Discord — receives copies of uploaded book photos in the private channel described in section 5.
• Our hosting provider — runs the servers the site is on.

We may also disclose data where the law requires it, for example in response to a valid order from a competent authority.

8. International transfers

OpenAI, Google, Cloudflare, impact.com, and Discord are based in or handle data in the United States. Where personal data leaves the European Economic Area, those companies rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses and, where it applies, the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. We do not send data anywhere else of our own accord.

9. How long we keep things

• Search terms: used to answer your search and not stored in any searchable history. They may briefly appear in server records.
• Server and security records: kept for a short operational period — no more than 90 days — then discarded.
• Uploaded photos: not kept by the website. Copies in the private review channel are deleted once checked, and sooner if you ask.
• Analytics: kept according to the setting on our Google Analytics account, up to a maximum of 14 months.
• Emails you send us: kept as long as needed to deal with your question and any follow-up.

10. Your rights

If you are in the EEA or the UK you have the right to ask for a copy of your personal data, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw consent at any time without affecting anything done before you withdrew it.

To use any of these rights, email [email protected]. We will reply within one month. One honest practical limit: because there are no accounts here, most of what we handle is not linked to a named person, so we may be unable to find data relating to you unless you can give us something to match on, such as the time of a photo upload.

You can also complain to a supervisory authority. In Portugal that is the Comissão Nacional de Proteção de Dados (CNPD), www.cnpd.pt. You may complain to the authority in your own country of residence instead.

11. Children

MyBookWorth is a tool for book collectors, sellers, and dealers. It is not aimed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16. If you think a child has sent us personal data — by uploading a photo, for example — contact us and we will delete it.

12. Security

The site is served over HTTPS, so traffic between your browser and our server is encrypted, and we keep access to the systems behind it restricted to the people and services that need it. No system is perfectly secure, and we do not claim certification to any formal security standard.

13. Changes to this policy

We will update this page whenever the site changes in a way that affects it — for example if we add a new analytics or advertising partner — and will revise the date below. Material changes to how we use your data will be signalled on the site.
